A letter to Rudi -

Der liebst Papi,
Ich habe mit Jo von Chicago gesprochen. Er hat gesagt, dass er uns auf diesem Zug an der Station anschließen würde, hat Albuquerque gerufen (Sie sollen den Weg hören, der ausgesprochen hat), der ein Tag von Hollywood ist, um zu beschützen, mich von mehr Überraschungen. Der Zug ist gemütlich, nehmen wir unsere Mahlzeiten in unserem Salon. Resi freut sich mit ihren neuen Zähnen. Den Letzten Tag! Jo hat auf in Albuquerque erhalten. Ich weiß didnt was ein Opfer das war, bis jetzt wir durch die Wüste gehen, und die Hitze ist unglaublich. Wir müssen die Fenster breit offen behalten, aber die Luft, die hereinkommt, ist wie Flammen! und dreckig. Wir breiten Blätter auf die Sitze aus weil die Samt vornehme Brandwunden die Beine, steigen an jeder Station ab, einen Spaziergang zu haben, aber die Hitze treibt uns zurück. Und Jo hat diese Reise gestern und jetzt wieder heute gemacht!

Er lässt alles organisieren. Wir steigen an Pasadena, einer Station vor Los Angeles, ab Journalisten zu vermeiden. Es wird ein paar dort geben, aber sie sind eine "Studiokontrollierte Presse", die nur die Geschichten benutzt, die das Studio schreibt, und sie reichen Publizität ihre Fotos für Genehmigung ein und berührend auf, bevor sie sie herausgeben. Welcher Trost, Jo hier in Befehl zu haben.

Dearest Papi,
I spoke to Jo from Chicago. He said he would join us on this train at the station called Albuquerque (you should hear the way that's pronounced), which is a day from Hollywood, in order to shield me from more surprises. The train is comfortable, we take our meals in our drawing room. Resi is happy with her new teeth. The Last Day!! Jo got on in Albuquerque. I didnt know what a sacrifice that was until now we are going through the desert and the heat is unbelievable. We have to keep the windows wide open, but the air that comes in is like flames! and filthy. We spread sheets on the seats because the velvet plush burns the legs, get off at each station to have a walk but the heat drives us back. And Jo made this trip yesterday and now again today!

He has everything organized. We get off at Pasadena, a station before Los Angeles, to avoid journalists. There will be a few there, but they are a "Studio-controlled press" who use only the stories the studio writes, and they submit their photos to Publicity for approval and touching up before they publish them. What comfort to have Jo here in command.

A letter to Rudi -

Papilein,
Ich werde vier Tage in New York nicht sein. Ich bin auf dem Zug nach Chicago. Als Walter Wanger mich die andere Nacht gerufen hat, gab es eine "undisponierte" Ehefrau. Ich bin zu ihm zu einem dunklen Restaurant gepasst, das sie einen "speakeasy" rufen. Er hat erklärt, dass sie sie rufen, die, weil als sie zuerst den costumers geöffnet haben, wurde angenommen "um leicht zu sprechen," bedeutend leise, um die Polizei anzuziehen nicht. Herr Wanger bezauberte und hat erklärt, dass er mich dort gebracht hatte, weil ich in der Pressekonferenz gesagt hatte, dass ich über alles Harry Richman und dies war liebe, wo er in Person singt. Jo hat gesagt, "Nimmt den nächsten Zug aus hier. Ich werde das Hotel ändern Ihre Vorbehalte lassen. Sprechen Sie mit irgendjemand nicht! Steigen Sie nur von New York aus. Ich werde für alles sorgen".

He explained that they call them that because when they first opened the costumers were supposed to "speak easy," meaning softly, not to attract the police. Mr. Wanger was charming and explained that he had brought me there because I had said in the press conference that I adore Harry Richman and this was where he sings in person. And soon Mr. Richman was on stage and singing "On the Sunny Side of the Street," which I've played I don't know how many times on my gramophone and hearing it there from him in person was very exciting. Then my handsome escort asked me to dance and when he had me in his arms he whispered, "von Sternberg's right, you are the find of the century," and then he had me in his hands as well as in his arms and I thought of asking if this was also in his instructions, but the way it happend was not amusing and rather embarrassing. So I excused myself to go to the powder room, left the speakeasy, found a taxi, and got back to the hotel. I telephoned Jo. Luckily I got him at home and told him what happend. As you know, I wasn't so angry becuse a man had given me a little squeeze on the behind, that's what it is there for. What I disliked was that it seemed to be taken for granted, that this was my contract, a sort of derecho del senor. They had the same attitude on the dock and at the press conference: "Sit on that trunk. Pull up your skirt. Higher. Give us more leg." I explained that I also disliked being placed in a position for journalists to ask stupid questions like "How do you like America?" when I had only been here for 10 minutes and not yet left the dock. There is no scintillating answer to that, unless nasty, and so I sounded dull.
Jo said, "Take the next train out here. I'll have the hotel change your reservations. Don't speak to anyone! Just get out of New York. I'll take care of everything."

Heading to Hollywood!

Private Room on the Train - Juni 9th, 1930:

Ich schreibe dies vom Zug, es hat verlassen New York vor kurzem und wird mich zu Hollywood nehmen. All of these reporters were there waiting for me, there was a swarm of them, they mobbed me! Suddenly they started asking all these questions, I didnt understand all of them but I heard a few, one of them was "How do you like America so far, Miss Dietrich?" I couldnt believe he was asking such a foolish question, how do I like America? I dont know, I just got here seconds ago, I've only seen the dock! how do I know if I like America if I havent seen anything of it yet?

But I suppose that is to be expected, I know some sentences of English but not a lot and answered "Yes, fine thank you" to most of what they were saying to get them to leave me alone, I wonder if all the reporters are going to be this mindless. *blows smoke out slowly* I sat on top of my luggage and posed for some photographs and when they were through a man came over to me, he said his name was Walter Wanger and that he was from Paramount and his instructions were to "escort you on your trip to Hollywood" and said Paramount is pleased at having me. We were going to stay in New York for a few days but things have changed, I will talk about that later. They had reserved a private compartment for me here on the train and all my luggage was loaded in, I am traveling myself. It hasnt been that bad so far, we should be arriving in another two days.

S.S. Bremen - Juni 6th, 1930:

Ich bin still auf dem Schiff. Wir sollen in New York einen anderen Tag ankommen. Jo hat mir einen Draht früher im Tag geschickt, hat gesagt, dass er das Buch. ....and liebt, dass er es in einen Film drehen will! Für mich! Jenes gemeine Ding, mein erster Amerikanisch Film? Welche Willenleute an mich denken! ...When den ich habe verdrahtet zurück erzählend, dass ihn ich didnt denkt, dass es gut wäre, dass er nur einen anderen messege geschickt hat, der mich erzählt, dass es und arbeiten wird, ihm zu vertrauen. Ich weiß dont was zu machen, habe ich vollen Glauben in seinem Urteil, nachdem wie er für "Den Blauen Engel" gesorgt hat, aber ich dont will der Denken von diesem Amerikaner ich bin jemand billig. Aber Jo hat auch gesagt, dass das Studio "Amy Vergnügt anpassen kann" besser einmal er reicht es den Schreibern da drüben ein. So werden wir sehen, werde ich es bis zu ihm verlassen. Ich denke, dass ich anfangen werde, zu wählen was zu tragen, wenn wir New York erreichen.

I dont know what to do, I have full faith in his judgement after how he took care of "The Blue Angel" but I dont want these American's thinking I am someone cheap. But Jo also said that the Studio can adapt "Amy Jolly" better once he submits it to the writers over there. So we'll see, I'll leave it up to him. I think I'll start choosing what to wear when we reach New York.

S.S. Bremen - Juni 3rd, 1930:

*lights a cigarette* Gut seiner 9 in der Nacht, bin ich auf den S.S. Bremen für zwei Tage und havent hat gekonnt, das Zimmer zu verlassen! Jeder aus dort auf dem Schiff erkennt mich. ...Jo hat erzählt mich, dass "Der Blaue Engel" ein Erfolg wäre, aber er didnt sagt, dass irgendetwas um es dieses große ist! Jeder hat gejubelt und hat am Premierminister geklatscht, nachdem es über war, und ich bin Phase mit Emil Jannings, er didnt weitergegangen, wie dass die meiste Aufmerksamkeit war zu mir gehen. Als ich habe erhalten hier ich das Zimmer und das Badezimmer mich selbst reinigen musste, gibt es so viele Keime in diesen Orten ich kann vertrauen irgendwelchem von den Leuten, die an Bord hier arbeiten, wie Sie wissen, dass sie wirklich etwas gereinigt haben?

Ich verpasse das Kind schon und es ist nur zwei Tage gewesen... *sigh* Rudi hat gesagt, dass sie in Ordnung sein wird, und Mutti [meine Mutter] hat gesagt, dass sie sie jeden Tag aber ich still wünscht kontrollieren wird, dass ich sie mit mir hätte nehmen können. Jo sagt dass vielleicht, nachdem eine Weile ich hinter gehen kann, und bringt sie, aber dass ich irgendeine Ablenkungen jetzt gleich haben kann, muss das sein Studio sehen, was ich wirklich zuerst machen kann. Er hat gesagt, dass sie "eine große Publizitätkampagne" haben werden, mich den Amerikanern einzuführen. When I got here I had to clean the room and the bathroom myself, there are so many germs in these places, I cant trust any of those people who work aboard here! how do you know they really cleaned anything?

I miss the child already and it's only been two days... *sigh* Rudi said she will be alright and Mutti [my mother] has said she will check on them each day but I still wish I could have taken her with me. Jo says that maybe after a while I can go back and bring her but that I cant have any distractions right now, that his Studio needs to see what I can really do first. He said they are going to have "a big publicity campaign" to introduce me to the Americans. He's also told me to stop eating as much food as I used too, I am going to need to loose weight for them, so for now I have only eaten small portions of the food that the service people bring to my room. When we were filming "The Blue Angel" he hired a bunch of fat women to work as extra's, I had no idea why he would do such a thing but later found out he did it for me, compared to them I looked thin! He's a genius! but he says that he cant do that when we start working in Hollywood. I am slightly curious to see what it will be like there, Jo says there are lots of interesting people, we shall see.

Jo also gave some of the photographs of me that we took for "The Blue Angel", I look alright.

But he says that after we get to Hollywood he will be able to do much better ones. I also left Jo a book earlier in the day before I went to the premier; he's still in Germany and will be coming on the next ship after he finishes things with UFA. The book is "Amy Jolly", a vulgar thing but entertaining, its just the kind of thing I know He will like.

I think I will go send a wire to Rudi and the child telling how much I miss them and maybe send a wire to Paramount telling them I am on my way.
